The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Abeokuta Branch, has commended the Ogun State Government under the leadership of Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun for inaugurating a 15-member administrative team for the Ogun State Electricity Regulatory Commission (OGERC), describing the move as a significant step toward the effective implementation of the Ogun State Electricity Law (Bill No. 017/OG/2024).
In a statement issued by the Branch Chairman, Engr. Olumayowa Ayodeji Idowu, FNSE, the Society recalled its earlier correspondence dated March 13, 2025 (Ref: NSEAbk/Sec/26/043), which advocated for the prompt activation of the State’s electricity regulatory framework.
The society noted that the inauguration reflects the State Government’s responsiveness and commitment to strengthening electricity regulation, improving power supply, and ensuring transparency and fairness in tariff administration.
The engineers, however, stressed the importance of adhering strictly to the regulatory transition timeline as outlined by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (Order No. NERC/2024/165), which mandates the transfer of regulatory authority to the state commission from December 24, 2024, with full transition expected by June 23, 2025.
They cautioned that any delay in completing the required institutional and operational structures could lead to regulatory gaps affecting consumer protection, licensing processes, tariff oversight, and dispute resolution.
While acknowledging the progress made, the NSE Abeokuta Branch urged the Ogun State Government to accelerate the remaining phases of implementation.
This includes ensuring that all statutory institutions under the law are fully operational, providing clear timelines for the rollout of the State electricity market, and promoting inclusive stakeholder participation throughout the implementation process.
The Branch emphasized that timely execution of these steps will unlock the economic and industrial benefits envisioned by the law, including improved power reliability, increased investor confidence, and enhanced service delivery to residents and industries within Ogun State.
Additionally, the engineers underscored the importance of professionalism in the execution of the reform, urging the government to engage only competent, experienced, and duly registered professional engineers to manage and drive both the technical and regulatory aspects of the sector.
This, they noted, is essential for ensuring efficiency, credibility, and long-term sustainability.
The NSE Abeokuta Branch reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Ogun State Government with expert knowledge and professional collaboration to ensure the successful delivery of the State’s electricity reform agenda.
