ABEOKUTA – The Director-General, National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade has announced that over 10 million pieces of Adire clothing were sold in the opening days of the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
Speaking during a press conference in Abeokuta, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission stated that the sales figure was confirmed through interactions with representatives of Adire sellers in the state.
He described the boom in sales as one of the most visible economic benefits of the festival, which has significantly boosted local businesses and the wider state economy.
“We have sold over 10 million pieces of Adire within the last four days,” Olopade revealed.
“I know this because the sellers are now complaining that they are running out of stock. Demand has outstripped supply.”
Olopade noted that the festival has not only provided a platform for sporting excellence but has also delivered tangible economic dividends to the host state.
He highlighted the growth of small-scale businesses, infrastructure improvements and rising demand for hospitality services as key indicators of the festival’s positive impact.
“When you go to the entrance of Babcock University, there are over a hundred small businesses operating there because of the festival,” he said.
“In and around the stadium, over 300 small-scale businesses are thriving. Some of these entrepreneurs became multimillionaires after the 2019 edition of the festival, and they have returned this year to continue their trade.”
He added that hotels in Abeokuta are experiencing full occupancy, with some visitors opting to stay in private residences due to limited accommodation availability.
According to him, the situation reflects how sports can serve as a powerful driver of economic activity.
“Sports doesn’t only unite people, it fuels the economy,” Olopade said.
The National Sports Festival continues to draw thousands of athletes, officials, and spectators, offering both sporting entertainment and a boost to commerce in the host communities in Ogun State.
