SWAN Mourns Passing of Ex-Abiola Babes, Shooting Stars Legend, Segun Agbayewa

ABEOKUTA – The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) is mourning the loss of a sports icon who made significant contributions to Nigerian sports, Olusegun Agbayewa.
The deceased, former Abiola Babes and Shooting Stars of Ibadan.
Agbayewa passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2025, after a brief illness.
Agbayewa died at the age of 67 and had an impressive career, competing in 203 league matches before his forceful retirement in football.
He started his football career in early 70s, with Mandilas Football Club in Ibadan, he later moved to University of Ibadan Workers Football Club in 1973 before joining IICC shooting Stars FC of Ibadan in 1976.
In 1981, he moved to Abiola Babes F C of Abeokuta.
Bros Gaba, as fondly called by his friends and teammates was a prolific striker, a goal getter anyday, any time.
He was a member of All-stars Football Association Asero.
He was the Chairman, Disciplinary Committee of the SWAN Security Cup in 2023.
He was a rare gem, a quintessential personality, someone whose promotion of sports generally knew no bounds.
