EXPOSED: Police Area Commander Demands N200,000 For Approval Of Petitions In Ogun, CDHR Alleges

ABEOKUTA – The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Ogun State Branch has accused Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Ogundele Olorunwa, Area Commander, Zone 2, Abeokuta, Ogun State Command of demanding amount of money ranging from ₦100,000 to ₦200,000 from complainants before approving petitions submitted to his office.

The CDHR in a shocking revelation on Sunday through a press statement issued in Abeokuta by its State Chairman, Comrade Funmbi Onifade and Secretary, Ali Adesina, accused ACP Ogundele Olorunwa of brazenly admitted to demanding for money through a recorded voice conversation.

The CDHR described ACP Ogundele’s action as abuse of power and affirmation of systemic corrupt practices in the Nigeria Police.

In a shocking display of effrontery in the voice recording, the CDHR alleged that, ACP Ogundele Olorunwa affirmed that petitions sent to the Nigeria Police Force, particularly Zone 2 under his command, are only approved when money is paid.

According to the CDHR, this corrupt practice was a travesty and a clear indication of the rot within the system.

The Ogun CDHR noted that this was not an isolated incident but rather a symptom of the deep-seated malaise that has plagued the Nigeria Police Force for years.

They said the senior officer’s actions are a stark reminder of the transactional justice and denial of rights that have become all too common in our society.

Additionally, the CDHR alleged that, ACP Ogundele Olorunwa contemptuously disregarded a court order by illegally seizing movable property belonging to law-abiding citizens, contrary to a valid judgment in Suit No: AB/390/2025, which was based on false allegations.

The CDHR accaued the Area Commander of ordering the detention of an innocent individual who challenged his illegal actions despite being presented with a valid subsisting court judgment.

The Encounter News recalled that, on May 16, 2025 during the National Sports Festival celebration in Ogun state, the accused Area Commander ordered the impoundment of a  Toyota camry vehicle belonging to Gbemidepo Popoola, a journalist with Premium Times Nigeria.

Gbemidepo, in the company of other three journalists entered the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto in Abeokuta to assess the preparedness of Ogun state government for the National Sports Festival.

Gbemidepo observed that Governor Dapo Abiodun was in the stadium on the final spor assessment of the arrangement within the stadium, so he came to also witnesses how the state government has modernized the MKO Abiola Stadium.

As Gbemidepo entered the parking lot of the state, a junior rank police officer directed the journalist to park his vehicle somewhere.

While the journalist was trying to ensure he was not blocking over vehicular movement, ACP Ogundele immediately jumped in front of the car and ordered the vehicle to be taken to his office for allegedly obstructing Governor Abiodun’s official vehicle.

All plea by the journalist and his colleagues to the garrulous Area Commander went on deaf ear until the intervention of Ogun SWAN Chairman who alerted the Aide Camp (ADC) to the governor before the vehicle was released at the station late at night.

However, the CDHR gave the leadership of the Nigeria Police a seven-day ultimatum to investigate, conduct necessary trial, discipline ACP Ogundele Olorunwa and communicate the public.

They said, failure to do so will be interpreted as condoning corruption and human rights abuses under the present leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

The press statement further reads: “The CDHR is appalled by the brazen admission of corruption by ACP Ogundele Olorunwa, Area Commander, Zone 2, Abeokuta, Ogun State Command. In a shocking display of effrontery, ACP Ogundele Olorunwa affirmed that petitions sent to the Nigeria Police Force, particularly Zone 2 under his command, are only approved when money is paid. This corrupt practice is a travesty and a clear indication of the rot within the system.

“It is important to emphasize that the good work of the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, in combating crimes and criminality which has in no small measure earned the trust of the public must not be truncated by the shameful and corrupt practices of ACP Ogundele Olorunwa. The Human Rights Community is deeply saddened that a senior officer of his rank would so indiscriminately engage in corrupt practices, even boasting that such conduct is also the practice in Zone 2 Lagos under the leadership of an Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG).

“A voice recording between ACP Ogundele Olorunwa and a human rights investigator confirms his corrupt practices and disregard for the justice system. This evidence is damning and underscores the urgent need for immediate action.

“Investigations have further revealed that ACP Ogundele Olorunwa demanded sums ranging from ₦100,000 to ₦200,000 from complainants before approving petitions submitted to his office. Petitions were left unattended and uninvestigated when complainants refused to comply with his unlawful demands.

“Additionally, ACP Ogundele Olorunwa contemptuously disregarded a court order by illegally seizing movable property belonging to law-abiding citizens, contrary to a valid judgment in Suit No: AB/390/2025, which was based on false allegations.

“He also ordered the detention of an innocent individual who challenged his illegal actions despite being presented with a valid subsisting court judgment.

“We call on the Inspector General of Police, IGP Adeolu Egbetokun (PhD) , and the Police Service Commission to:

1. Thoroughly and urgently investigate ACP Ogundele Olorunwa’s corrupt practices and human rights violations.

2. Take disciplinary action against him for undermining the rule of law, even with admission and confirmation of systemic corruption in the Nigeria Police Force.

3. Remove ACP Ogundele Olorunwa from office immediately if found guilty.

“We give the leadership of the Nigeria Police a seven-day ultimatum to investigate, conduct necessary trial, discipline ACP Ogundele Olorunwa and communicate the public. Failure to do so will be interpreted as condoning corruption and human rights abuses under the present leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

“We like to call on our allied bodies, including Amnesty International, the Civil Liberties Organization, the National Human Rights Commission, and other relevant human rights organizations, to:

1. Track, Investigate and document ACP Ogundele Olorunwa’s human rights violations and corrupt practices,especially in his past formations of Police assignments.

2. Join us in demanding open accountability and justice.

“We further urge collective action to expose ACP Ogundele Olorunwa’s corrupt activities, document his persistent disregard for the justice system, and identify his co-conspirators in Zone 2, Abeokuta. The goal is to liberate his many victims, past and present, who have suffered injustice as a result of his disgraceful conduct.

“We equally urge victims of his corruption and human rights abuses to come forward and confidentially share their experiences with CDHR Ogun State.”
