Blame Abayomi Hunye For Indiscriminate Refuse Dumping Across Ogun State, Say Waste Vendors
ABEOKUTA – The Association of Waste Management Vendors and Recyclers of Nigeria has attributed the recent eyesore of indiscriminate refuse dumping across Abeokuta to the former OGWAMA boss, Abayomi Hunye, citing his “shady and dirty deeds” during his time at the agency.
Addressing journalists at a press conference in Abeokuta on Wednesday, executive members of the association alleged that Hunye issued licenses to unprofessional individuals who lacked tax clearances, causing the government to lose significant revenue.
The association’s Secretary, Pastor Olusegun Adetula, urged the state government to constitute a task force within the agency to curb the proliferation of unlicensed operators.
He recalled that the association had previously protested against Hunye for extortion and the indiscriminate issuance of licenses, which ultimately led to his suspension by the state government.
The association raised further concerns regarding the influx of unlicensed, non-professional vendors who were allegedly granted contracts without proper tax clearance under the previous administration.
”One major issue we had with Hunye was that he brought non-professional vendors into this business by appointing them to companies where our members work,” a representative stated. “By the time the protest was held, Hunye quickly rushed to sign approval letters for vendors who are not our members. This spoiled the registration procedure because you need a tax clearance to renew your license. Hunye was issuing licenses without these clearances, which invariably caused the government to lose money.”
The association added: “Because he wanted to cover his tracks, he continued issuing those licenses. However, the new MD, Alhaji Farouk Akintunde, has promised to look into it, and a memo has already been issued revoking those licenses.”
The association commended the new MD, Alhaji Farouk Akintunde for revoking the irregular licenses aimed at curbing loss of government revenue and a breach of official registration procedures.
They observed that the impact of the new administration is already visible on the streets, with waste collection improving significantly over the last month.
The association thanked Governor Dapo Abiodun for his “timely intervention” in appointing Alhaji Farouk Akintunde, stating they are convinced the new MD is “equal to the task” of restoring order and hygiene to the state.
Furthermore, the association distanced itself from Mr. Adesanya Kunle Tele. They clarified that he is a former president whose tenure has expired, and he now serves only as an Ex-officio member.
They warned the public against having any official dealings with him in the capacity of president, describing him as an impostor and stating that anyone who deals with him as the head of the association does so at their own risk.
