IBADAN – The Soun of Ogbomosoland , Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye has stripped a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, and the Mayegun of Ogbomosoland of his traditional title with immediate effect .
The power play between the traditional ruler and Senator Adeseun started shortly after the installation of Oba Olaoye as the Soun of Ogbomosoland .
Citing alleged misconduct and actions considered inconsistent with the expectations of the office, Oba Olaoye was infuriated by the alleged disrespect and honour due the office of Soun , which Senator Adeseun was accused.
The decision was conveyed in an official letter issued on behalf of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, and signed by the Palace Secretary, Toyin Ajamu.
According to the statement, the suspension followed what the Palace described as “sustained acts of insubordination, wilful disregard, and persistent disrespect” toward the Palace and the traditional institution of the Soun.
The Palace noted that the senator’s conduct, observed over a period of time, had become a matter of concern and was deemed incompatible with the dignity and responsibilities attached to the Mayegun title.
“As a chief of this Palace, your actions have fallen short of the standards expected and have demonstrated a disregard for the authority, traditions, and sanctity of the institution,” the statement read in part.
The suspension takes immediate effect, and the senator has been directed to cease presenting himself as the Mayegun of Ogbomosoland in all forms, including at public events, official functions, and across media platforms.
Ogbomoso has a long-standing traditional structure in which chieftaincy titles carry significant cultural and social responsibilities.
Analysts say the development underscores the continued influence of traditional institutions in maintaining discipline among title holders.
As of the time of filing this report, Senator Adeseun had not issued any public response regarding the suspension.
The Palace expressed expectation of full compliance with the directive, emphasizing the need to uphold the integrity and authority of the traditional institution.
