IGP Disu Assures Protesting Retired Police Officers Of Adequate Pension Compensation
ABUJA – A protest by a group of retired police officers at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa on Monday is increasingly being interpreted as a factional move, coming just days after assurances from the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force that their concerns are already receiving high-level attention.
Last week, representatives of the retirees had assembled at the entrance of the Inspector General of Police’s office, where they raised similar issues concerning the Police Exit Bill and pension arrangements.
During that meeting, the IGP acknowledged their grievances and gave a firm commitment to formally relay their demands to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He further urged patience, assuring them that their concerns would be addressed through the appropriate institutional channels and that feedback would be provided within weeks.
Against this backdrop, Monday’s protest at the Presidential Villa appears to reflect the actions of a breakaway faction rather than a unified stance among all retired officers. While their concerns over the Contributory Pension Scheme and the pending Police Exit Bill remain valid, the timing of the demonstration suggests a shift away from the previously coordinated approach.
Speaking to our correspondent, security analyst Busayo Mogaji warned that such uncoordinated actions could undermine the retirees’ cause.
“Acting outside the agreed engagement framework risks creating an impression of disunity, which may ultimately slow progress,” he said.
Mogaji noted that an established line of communication with the authorities was already in place, along with a commitment to escalate the matter to the Presidency. He added that allowing the process to run its course might have offered a more strategic route to achieving their objectives.
