Again, Fresh Damage Hits Rehabilitated Car Wash–Adatan Road Days After Reopening
ABEOKUTA – Barely days after it was reopened to motorists following repairs, a section of the newly rehabilitated Car Wash–Adatan Road in Abeokuta has suffered another major failure, raising fresh concerns over the quality of work executed on the project.
The failed portion of the carriageway, which appears to have caved in at the centre, has left a large depression with broken asphalt and exposed stone base, forcing motorists to slow down and navigate around the damaged section to avoid accidents.
The road, which was commissioned for public use about three weeks ago after undergoing reconstruction, had initially developed defects within seven days of its completion. At the time, the Ogun State Government attributed the failure to floodwater caused by blocked drainage channels, insisting that the problem was not a result of poor construction.
The government subsequently closed the affected section for remedial work before reopening it to traffic a few days later.
However, the latest collapse, which occurred barely three days after the road was reopened, has reignited public criticism over the durability of the reconstruction.
Residents and road users expressed disappointment over the recurring failure, alleging that the project was executed with poor workmanship and substandard construction materials.
According to a taxi driver, Mr. Semiu Aderibigbe, a properly constructed road should withstand heavy rainfall and traffic without deteriorating within weeks of completion.
“The government blamed the first damage on blocked drainage, but this latest collapse has happened almost immediately after repairs. That raises serious questions about the quality of the work done,” he said.
Others called on the state government to conduct an independent assessment of the project and hold the contractor accountable if investigations establish negligence or failure to meet construction standards.
The recurring damage has also heightened safety concerns, as the depression now poses a risk to motorists, particularly at night and during periods of heavy traffic.
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement had been issued by the Ogun State Government on the latest failure of the road.
