Ogun West: Senator Yayi Seeks Reopening Of Petrol Stations In Border Areas Amidst Scarcity

ABEOKUTA  – Ahead of Saturday’s National Assembly Elections, the APC Senatorial Candidate for Ogun West Senatorial District, Senator Adeola Olamilekan Yayi has called for the need to reopen petrol stations in border towns of the Senatorial District.

Recall that the federal government, through the Nigeria Customs Service, directed that petroleum products should not be supplied to fuel stations within 20km of the borders.

Senator Yayi equally admonished Nigerian Customs Service and other security agencies to intensify the curbing of smuggling across the borders and stop killing of residents of the senatorial district.

He spoke on Thursday at the final rally of his campaign tour in Ilaro-Yewa, Ogun state.

Senator Adeola, who is also the Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance, promised the people living in the international border areas of the senatorial district to work for the rapid development of the area if he is elected as a senator.

This, according to him, would help to address some of the challenges confronting people residing in the border communities daily.

The senator noted that it was no fault of the inhabitants that they are at the ‘gateway’ at the international border with the Republic of Benin, calling on the federal government to cancel the 20 kilometre distance for petrol stations operating at the border areas.

“I have gone round the 59 wards of Ogun West district. I have moved round each of the ward not because of funfare or jamboree, but as your Senator that will represent you, I have to know the terrain of the district I want to represent.

“I have been to all the 1,536 polling units and I have the opportunity of going to every wards and know the challenges people are facing.

“There are challenges my people are facing that need my attention when I get to the senate. For those that need my urgent attention, I have been attending to them. We have empowered over 15,000 in my constituency.

“I am aware of your pains following the policy of no fuel station 20 kilometers from the international border. And even after the 20 kilometers, only two stations are available for you for fuel purchase at present around the border. Imagine, people traveling from Idiroko to Owode Yewa to get fuel and exhaust the fuel before getting back to their destinations.

“I am going to facilitate the operation of more filling stations to ease your plight. We don’t want to be killed again by Nigeria Customs Service. It is part of my goal to end these regrettable incidents of killing our people. The border must be reopened”, he stated.

The senator, however, called on all the people to use their PVCs on Saturday and vote for all APC candidates, adding that with an Asiwaju Bola Tinubu presidency and his status as a super-ranking senator in the 10th Senate, issues of the border will be easily resolved.

Adeola stated further that Ogun West people are supporting Governor Dapo Abiodun for a second term of just four more years as that is a better bargain for Ogun West to move closer to the exalted seat of the governor of the state that had eluded them since the creation of the state in 1976.

Also speaking during the rally, a former deputy governor in the state and indigene of the local government, Alhaja Salmot Badru, said that Ogun West would be better for it if the people elect Adeola as their senator on Saturday.

She noted that he has done so much for the senatorial district even before he would emerge to represent the district at the Red Chamber of the National Assembly.
