African Nations Lament FIFA Decision To Remove Athletics Tracks From Football Stadiums, Change of Athletes’ Nationality, Others

ABEOKUTA- African Athletics Confederation (CAA) Council has blamed the challenges facing African athletics, mainly those relating to the cancellation of funds allocated to the African Athletics Development Centres, FIFA’s decision to remove athletics tracks in football stadiums, non-compliance with regulations and procedures from the CAA by its member federations to factors affecting African athletes globally.

The Council also recognizes other challenges to the very poor representation of Africans in World Athletics (WA) governing bodies to the change of nationality of African best athletes.

With a view to finding strategies and solutions to meet these challenges, the Council mandated the CAA President to engage in discussions with the authorities of WA, FIFA, CAF, our National Federations and the governments of African countries for the raise awareness about the maintenance of the creation of athletics tracks in our various countries.

The Council said these steps would maintain the exceptional results that honour Africa continent and the African youth.

African Athletics Confederation (CAA) gave these recommendations yesterday in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital during the council’s meeting.

The Council, therefore, encouraged amendment to the World Athletics Statutes (WA), supports the principle of limiting terms of Council Members and Presidents of Continental Associations, but rejects retroactivity in implementing the new reform.
