Campaign Without Attacking Senator Yayi, Segun Showunmi Cautions Ogun Governorship Aspirants
ABEOKUTA – Ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State, the Convener of the Alternative Movement, Otunba Segun Showunmi, has cautioned governorship aspirants in Ogun State against reducing the 2027 election discussion to ethnic or tribal sentiments, urging them to present clear development agendas to the people.
Showunmi while receiving the state executives of Action Alliance (AA) at his Ibara GRA residence, said governorship aspirants should centre their manifestos on issues based rather than attacking the Senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District, Senator Adeola Olamilekan Yayi.
Showunmi stressed that the conversation about the next governor of Ogun State must centre on vision, competence and accountability, not identity politics.
“Campaign your campaign without an attack on Yayi. Nobody should brag the right of being an Egba. Who gave them the right? Don’t reduce the conversation of the next governorship in Ogun State to tribal issues. Ogun is a cosmopolitan modern town,” he declared
According to him, the people of Ogun deserve a serious and development-focused debate ahead of 2027.
“The conversation for Ogun now is different from all these things you people are giving oxygen to. And then, when you don’t ask them the question of development, you trivialise the conversation on how do we even know who to support? How do we even know who to push? How do we even know who to market?”
Showunmi challenged aspirants to publicly articulate their ambitions and justify why they should be entrusted with leadership.
“Let any man who wants to be governor, let him come forward and tell Ogun people what he desires and why. And do his justification,” he said.
He warned against monetising the electoral process or conditioning voters to believe that financial inducement is the only deciding factor in politics.
“Why should you people agree that in your generation, in our generation, why should you people agree that it is the people whose parents and themselves have stolen our money because we are not punishing them?
“Why should you people agree that the only conversation on the table will be money?”, he asked.
The chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) argued that when political discourse is stripped of development questions, voters are left confused and disengaged.
“You will force our people, who are on their own, not even coming out. We are still begging you to help us beg them. You will not force them to become procured people on the day of election,” he said.
He insisted that elections should not be reduced to transactional engagements but should instead be driven by ideas, integrity and measurable plans for growth.
According to him, the path to 2027 must begin with aspirants clearly outlining their policy direction and convincing Ogun residents on merit, not appealing to ethnic loyalties.
“The conversation for Ogun now is different,” he said.
The State Chairman of AA, Prof Tunde Adebola, expressed the party’s commitment to working closely with Showunmi to achieve his governorship ambition in the forthcoming election.
