FCT – Eminent stakeholders and concerned leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called for urgent reforms within the party to prevent its collapse.
At a meeting held in Abuja on Monday, the stakeholders identified disregard for the party constitution as a major cause of the crisis.
The stakeholders urged the party to respect the Supreme Court judgment affirming Senator Sam Anyanwu as the substantive National Secretary.
It’s also resolved that the party should zone its presidential candidacy to the South in 2027, citing fairness, inclusion, and federal character principles.
On constitutional authority, it was resolved that only Senator Anyanwu can issue notices for national meetings, and any actions not authorized by him are null and void.
The stakeholders added that, the National Secretary can only be removed by a properly constituted National Convention.
Calling for action going forward, it was agreed that the Acting National Chairman and National Secretary should jointly issue a notice to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) with an attached agenda for the National Executive Committee meeting.
Party members are urged to uphold the rule of law, respect constitutional mandates, and resist destabilizing machinations.
The stakeholders expressed alarm that the party is heading towards self-annihilation due to selfish tendencies and divisive interests within the party’s National Executive Committee, National Working Committee, and Board of Trustees levels. They emphasized the need for internal democracy, equity, and justice.
The stakeholders reiterated their commitment to the party and urged members to support the National Reconciliation Committee headed by Senator Bukola Saraki.
The meeting was attended by notable figures, including former governors Ifeanyi Uguanyi, Samuel Ortom, and Okezie Ikpeazu.
