It is with a deep sense of loss and profound respect that I mourn the passing of Chief (Mrs.) Adenike Ebunoluwa Oyagbola, a distinguished daughter of Ogun West, a trailblazer, and an inspiration to many.
Born in Igan Alade, Yewa North, she rose from humble beginnings to become Nigeria’s first female cabinet minister, shattering barriers at a time when public leadership was largely a male-dominated sphere. As Minister of National Planning (1979–1983) under President Shehu Shagari, she laid the groundwork for national development policies that shaped Nigeria’s economic trajectory. She later went on to serve as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, and Guatemala, further elevating our nation’s presence on the global stage.
Yet reducing Mama Oyagbola to her political achievements would be a disservice. She was a passionate educator, a great public servant, and the embodiment of excellence that Ogun State and Nigeria continue to aspire toward. Her life was proof that excellence has no gender, and dedication knows no limit.
Her passing is a great loss, not just to her family and loved ones, but to all of us who admire her journey and contributions. However, we take solace in the fact that she lived a life of purpose and left a lasting impact. Her story will continue to inspire women, young leaders, and all who dare to dream beyond limitations.
On behalf of the good people of Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency, I extend my heartfelt condolences to her family, the people of Ogun State, and all who knew and revered her.
