Commercial Flight Operation At Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport, Crucial Component Of Modern Sports Devt – SWAN

ABEOKUTA – The Ogun State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has noted that commencement of commercial flight operations at the Gateway Airport, Iperu, Ogun State will improve air travel infrastructure as a crucial component of modern sports development.

SWAN in a congratulatory message by the Chairman of the association, Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, the commercial flight operations would ease logistics for teams and athletes, encouraging sports enthusiasts and tourists to visit Ogun State, thereby increasing the commercial viability of local sports.

The association congratulated ValueJet Airlines and its owner, Otunba Kunle Soname, for becoming the first airline to successfully operate a scheduled commercial flight at the newly inaugurated Gateway Agro-Cargo Airport, Iperu-Remo, Ogun State.

The SWAN Chairman said this landmark achievement, with the inaugural commercial flight to Abuja on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, was a testament to the remarkable progress in infrastructure development being recorded in the state.

He hailed the indigenous airline for its pioneering spirit and commitment to expanding air connectivity across Nigeria, particularly from the Gateway State.

“The commencement of commercial flight operations at the Gateway Airport, pioneered by ValueJet owned by our indigenous man, Otunba Kunle Soname will undoubtedly unlock tremendous opportunities in commerce, investment, and tourism, ultimately creating jobs and fostering an environment for socio-economic activities, including sports, to thrive.”

He described improved air travel infrastructure as a crucial component of modern sports development especially in the area of easing logistics for teams and athletes, encouraging sports enthusiasts and tourists to visit Ogun State, thereby increasing the commercial viability of local sports.

Comrade Ogunsiji commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for successfully delivering the airport, which boasts one of the longest runways in the West African sub-region, capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft.

He wished ValueJet a safe and successful operation and looks forward to utilizing the new air route to cover and promote sporting activities in the state and beyond.
