Election: Ogun NUJ Chairmanship Candidate, Olugbenro Harps On Reputation Management, Facelift For Union Secretariat

ABEOKUTA – A chairmanship candidate for the December 21, 2022 election of Ogun State Chapter of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oluremi Olugbenro has assured members of the union of giving facelift to the popular Iwe-Irohin Press Centre.

Iwe-Irohin Press Centre is the secretariat of all registered journalists in Ogun state.

But Olugbenro while meeting members of the Federated chapel of Ogun NUJ on Wednesday maintained renovation of the secretariat remains part of the Cardinal agenda of her administration if she emerges as the next NUJ Chairman.

Olugbenro who works with Paramount FM of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) stressed that, as part of the process to give the secretariat a facelift, her administration will embark on construction of modern complex with the support and partnership of corporate organizations.

She said the era when the union will go cap in hand begging people for money must stop, stressing that the union must devise another means of revenue generation.

She said the complex among many other initiatives would beautify the secretariat and additional source of income for the union.

According to her, the union under her leadership will create research centre and library for young journalists in the state to source for materials to develop themselves professionally.

Olugbenro, therefore, solicited the support and votes of the union members in the state ahead of the December, 2022 election.

She said, “Our vision and programmes predicated on 3R which are Reputation Management, Retraining and Reactivation. “By God’s grace with your votes, if we emerge as the new executive of Ogun NUJ, we want to work on the battered image of our union. We need to re-engineer the way members of the public are seeing us now. We need to change the narratives.

“We must facilitate training for our members especially the young journalists who are the future of this profession. We need to give ourselves adequate training to be able to compete shoulder to shoulder with our colleagues elsewhere.

“We will reactivate many abandoned programmes like the Ogun NUJ Guest Nite, the Veterans Nite, our Press Week, among other programmes. We are aware there is a need to change the face of the secretariat, it is part of our consideration. But we cannot do it all alone, we will need to leverage on the capacity of our members to see how we can achieve all these.”

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Federated Chapel, Alhaji Abu Satar urged the candidate to fulfill her electoral promises if she emerged as the next council chairman.

Abu Satar who frowned at the poor state of the union secretariat, urged the incoming executive to ensure giving facelift to the council.
