ABEOKUTA – The Eselu of Iselu Kingdom, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, has urged political aspirants from Ogun West to embrace dialogue, consensus and collective understanding ahead of the 2027 governorship race, warning that internal division has historically cost the zone its ambition for the state’s top job.
The monarch made the call on Saturday at the Mid-term Constituency Engagement of the member representing Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency, Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, held at Comprehensive High School, Ayetoro.
Speaking before a gathering of traditional rulers, political leaders and constituents, Oba Akinyemi stressed that individual political ambitions must be subordinated to the broader interest of Ogun West, urging all aspirants to sit together, negotiate and chart a common course.
He made the call following appeals from some members of the constituency that Isiaka should contest the governorship election in 2027.
Reflecting on past political setbacks, the Eselu recalled how divisions within the zone weakened previous attempts at producing a governor, allowing other blocs to take advantage.
The traditional ruler however singled out Isiaka for praise, describing his performance in the House of Representatives as exceptional. He noted that the lawmaker’s achievements had surpassed expectations, particularly for a first-term legislator.
He added that Isiaka’s political value was no longer in doubt, urging him and other aspirants to remain open to consultation and negotiation regarding their next political steps.
“I have been on the throne for more than two decades, and I can say categorically that what Hon. Gboyega Nasir Isiaka has done in Yewa North/Imeko-Afon is remarkable. “On behalf of all Kabiyesis, I thank him profoundly.”
““If you decide not to return to the House of Representatives and you are seeking another mandate, always give room for negotiation. “This counsel applies to all politicians in Ogun West.”
“This time, all our politicians must build consensus. They must sit down, dialogue and reach an understanding on what each person will do at the representation level.” the monarch advised.
The Eselu concluded with a prayer for the realization of an Ogun West governorship aspiration, reiterating that dialogue and mutual accommodation remained the only viable path forward.
Earlier, Isiaka presented an account of his stewardship, stating that he had facilitated constituency projects across all 21 wards in Yewa North/Imeko-Afon Federal Constituency.
He listed interventions to include the construction and rehabilitation of classroom blocks, rehabilitation of primary healthcare centres, construction of a Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre, and the establishment of a mini power substation. Other projects include road rehabilitation, provision of transformers, installation of over 1000 solar-powered street lights, provision of boreholes and other projects.
Isiaka also highlighted human capital and social interventions such as the facilitation of federal scholarships, employment of support teachers, donation of school bags to pupils, medical outreaches, and empowerment programmes that have benefited over 5,000 constituents.
He further noted his role in facilitating private investment in rice processing within the constituency and the construction of a Police Divisional Station to strengthen security.
On the legislative front, the lawmaker disclosed that he had sponsored six key bills, moved six motions, and led three advocacy initiatives in the House of Representatives.
“I will not rest on my oars,” the lawmaker said, pledging sustained commitment to effective representation and people-focused governance.
