Olowu Emphasizes Importance Of Reading, As 30 Afrograms Students Get NECO Support
ABEOKUTA – Owu Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to education, literacy, and the development of young minds as it backed initiatives aimed at improving learning in African Church Grammar School (AFROGRAMS), Ita Iyalode, Abeokuta.
During an event held on Wednesday, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Professor Saka Adelola Matemilola, represented by the Orunto of Owu Kingdom, Chief Abiodun Lasile, emphasized the importance of reading and intellectual growth in shaping the next generation.
“Reading is not just an art; it is a way of life. It sharpens the mind, expands knowledge, and opens doors to endless opportunities,” Chief Lasile stated.
He urged students to embrace reading and education, stressing that they have no excuse not to succeed, as many before them have laid a strong foundation for their progress.
“You are a pride to yourselves and this school. The old students have set the pace; now, it is up to you to build on it,” he added.
The event also featured the presentation of renewable energy and sustainability activity booklets, titled Going Green Tips, to encourage environmental responsibility among students.
Beyond the advocacy for reading, education was further strengthened with a ₦1 million donation by Professor Olugbemiga Adekunmi Olatidoye, the CEO of Tido Tech International and a distinguished member of the AFROGRAMS 68/72 set to commemorate his 70th birthday.
Recognizing the financial struggles of some students, Prof. Olatidoye covered the NECO registration fees of 30 students, ensuring they could sit for their exams without financial obstacles.
“Rather than complain about challenges, I believe in taking action. Education is the key to progress, and I am committed to supporting young minds in their journey,” he said.
As part of his contributions, Prof. Olatidoye also donated a 3D machine to the school and promised to introduce students to robotics, drones, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity to equip them with the necessary skills for the digital age.
The initiative was carried out in collaboration with Solace Foundation, a non-governmental organization founded by Olori Ameenah Adeleye Matemilola, Queen of Owu Kingdom, to further support educational advancement.
The event showcased the impact of old students giving back to their alma mater, helping bridge gaps in education and providing opportunities for future generations.
The Principal of AFROGRAMS Senior, Adebanjo Matilda Abisola, described the initiative as a significant contribution to the school’s academic progress.
“Paying the NECO fees for 30 students is a remarkable gesture, and we sincerely appreciate this kind support. I hope other old students will emulate this and invest in the future of our students,” she stated.
On behalf of the beneficiaries, Assistant Head Boy, Alex Monday, expressed gratitude, acknowledging the impact of the financial and technological support on their education.
With Owu Kingdom’s backing, the old students’ commitment, and Solace Foundation’s involvement, AFROGRAMS students are not only receiving financial assistance but also gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in their academic and professional lives.
