SWAN To Organize Annual Memorial Lecture To Immortalize Late Hakeem Akintunde

ABEOKUTA – The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun state chapter has announced plans to immortalize its former Chairman, late Hakeem Akintunde, by organizing an annual memorial lecture in recognition of his immense contributions to sports journalism and development in Nigeria.

The commemorative event is scheduled to hold on every February 27, marking what would have been his birthday starting from next year.

In a statement by the Chairman of the Association, Comrade Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji, the event would be used to celebrate his life, professional excellence, and unwavering dedication to the advancement of sports reporting and administration.

Hakeem Akintunde, who served meritoriously as Chairman of SWAN between 2017 – 2023, was widely respected for his leadership, integrity, and passion for grassroots sports development.

He also strengthened the association’s structure, promoted ethical sports journalism, and fostered unity among members.

According to the SWAN Chairman, the decision to immortalise Akintunde is aimed at sustaining his legacy and inspiring upcoming sports journalists to uphold the values he stood for professionalism, accountability, and service.

Comrade Ogunsiji emphasised the need for members of the sporting community, media practitioners, and stakeholders across Nigeria to join in celebrating the life and enduring impact of a man whose contributions significantly shaped sports journalism in the country.
