ABEOKUTA – Sons and daughters of Omu, both at home and in the diaspora, on Saturday, unanimously endorsed the Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Otunba Gbenga Daniel for re-election to the senate.
This development may have shut out the senatorial ambition of the state Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.
The Omu indigenes gave the endorsement on Saturday during the 34th Omu Eleni Day celebration.
The colourful cultural event, known for fostering unity and driving community development, took an added significance as indigenes openly declared their support for Senator Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD) as their preferred candidate for the Ogun East Senatorial seat in the forthcoming elections.
The occasion also featured a warm and symbolic gesture, as attendees celebrated in advance the 70th birthday of Senator Daniel with a ceremonial cake-cutting, honouring him as a distinguished son of the soil.
Traditional rulers, community leaders, clubs, associations, and residents commended his impactful contributions to the development of Ogun East.
They highlighted his consistency in public service and unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people.
Speaking at the event, several participants attributed their endorsement to his strong ancestral ties to Omu and his proven track record in leadership.
While acknowledging the efforts of the current governor, they noted that he hails from the Remo axis and is not considered an indigene of Omu.
Their stance, they explained, reflects the Yoruba adage, “Omo eni o ni se idi bebere ka fi ileke si idi omo elomi,” underscoring the value of supporting one’s own.
They said the endorsement was expressed in the spirit of unity and celebration, saying it reflected the enduring bond between Senator Gbenga Daniel and the Omu community.
The event concluded with renewed optimism and a shared commitment to progress, as many expressed confidence that his continued representation would further accelerate development across Ogun East.
