ABEOKUTA – The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Alamutu has cautioned newly admitted students of Harvarde College of Science, Business, and Management Studies, Abeokuta against the dangers of cultism, urging them to focus on their studies to become future leaders, free from criminal affiliations.
Alamutu gave the charge on Saturday at the matriculation ceremony of the institution.
The Commissioner of Police who was represented by ACP Manger Fergus enjoined the new students to eschew all forms of social vices that may truncate their chances of graduating.
His words “I want to urge you, as you come to study, you’ll eschew all instances of being lured into cultism. One danger of becoming a member of a cult group is you hardly resigned from it because at a point when you want to denounce it, that’s when the members who are still practicing will come after you. My advice is to eschew all instances of being members of any of the confraternity so that you will study and become great leaders in future.”
He urged the students to uphold academic excellence and eschew cultism.
Similarly, the Ogun State the registrar of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) represented by the Coordinator Akeem Abdul Hameed, emphasized the importance of adherence to accreditation standards, stressing the need for the institution to fully comply with JAMB regulations.
Delivering his speech, the Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University, Professor Onyemachi Ogbulu represented by the Director Institute for Continuing Education, Professor John Ogbonna congratulated the matriculating students on their admission and emphasized the significance of this stage in their academic journey.
He encouraged them to approach their studies with dedication, reminding them of the university’s uncompromising stance on academic standards and adherence to rules and regulations.
“I urge you to obey school rules and regulations as contravention to any of them will be met with stiff penalties, and in some cases expulsion from the institution. Abia State University, Institute for Continuing Education Students’ Handbook will be made available to all of you and it is compulsory, to guide you accordingly. I therefore implore you all to painstakingly go through the Handbook and be adequately acquainted with our laws and regulations.”
Also speaking, the Provost of Harvarde College, Dr. Oyetunji Ismail Oyefemi, highlighted the college’s commitment to provide quality education, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and competent faculty.
He stressed the importance of skill acquisition and underscored the institution’s zero tolerance for cultism, emphasizing the severe consequences for those involved in such activities.
Meanwhile, the President of Harvarde College institution, Dr. Oluwatosin Adebayo reiterated the importance of the matriculation ceremony, likening it to signing a contract with the institution.
He warned against unseriousness and assured students that academic success required diligence and perseverance.
