LG Poll: Concede Chairmanship Ticket To Ex-NANS Spokesperson, Students Beg Abiodun, APC
ABEOKUTA – Students in Ogun State under the aegis of the National Association of Ogun State Students and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Ogun Joint Campus Committee, have appealed to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor Dapo Abiodun to concede the chairmanship ticket for the Ewekoro Local Government to the former National Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Azeez Adeyemi.
The student bodies made the appeal in a statement jointly signed by the President of the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) Kehinde Thomas and the Ogun NANS Chairman, Francis Adeyanju, on Wednesday, in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
Adeyemi, who is currently the Special Assistant to the Ogun State Governor on Student Affairs, had on Tuesday clinched a second position among seven chairmanship aspirants during a shadow party primaries organized by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the local government.
The former student leader, according to the result sheet of the contest signed by the Chairman of the APC Apex Body in Ewekoro and the APC Local Government party chairman, Shina Adegbenro and Ayinde Sogbamu, respectively, polled 7 votes out of the 22 votes cast, coming behind the immediate past chairman of the council, who scored 10 votes.
The Ogun APC, through a notification issued on Monday by the State Secretary, Adeleke Aderigbe Tella, had informed the Local Government Party chairmen to forward the names of potential candidates where consensus is achieved, while two or maximum of three names should be submitted, where consensus could not be achieved.
Congratulating Adeyemi for his feat, NAOSS and NANS, noted that the outcome of the shadow election had clearly shown that Adeyemi is rooted in the politics of his local government and popular among the youth, hence, he should be handed over the party ticket for the forthcoming LG election.
They equally saluted him for not bowing to “intimidators and political gladiators” who pressured him to quit the chairmanship race.
The student bodies, however, emphasized that since Adeyemi emerged among the top three chairmanship aspirants in Ewekoro LG in accordance with the notification of APC in the state, he should be shortlisted as the consensus candidate to fly the flag of the party in the election.
While reiterating their support and readiness to mobilize support for the governor’s aide in his bid to become the council chairman, NAOSS and NANS pointed out that Adeyemi remains the best among the top three chairmanship aspirants, stressing that he is capable of espousing good governance at grassroots given his background in student unionism.
According to the statement, “Adeyemi remains the best candidate to flay the party flag during the forthcoming local government election in Ogun State”.
“As our leader, we have confidence in his ability to deliver and make APC proud, not only in Ewekoro but Ogun and even beyond. We, hereby, appeal to the leadership of APC in the state and our student-friendly governor to shortlist him as the consensus chairmanship candidate for the forthcoming local government election in Ogun State”, NAOSS and NANS added.
