NANS Ogun Urges Calm, Rejects Protest Over Abducted Students, Backs Security Agencies
ABEOKUTA – The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun State Joint Campus Council (JCC), has urged Nigerian students, student leaders, and members of the public to remain calm and avoid protests over the recent abduction of students in Ogun State.
It emphasizes that unity and cooperation with security agencies are the best ways to secure the victims’ safe release.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its Chairman, Comrade Habeebullahi Adekunle Tijani, popularly known as Kennyology, the student body expressed deep concern over the incident, describing it as unfortunate and acknowledging the pain, anxiety and outrage it has generated among students and the wider public.
The council, however, maintained that organising protests at a time when security agencies are conducting tactical rescue operations could be counterproductive.
According to the statement, the priority should be to support and encourage security operatives to intensify efforts aimed at rescuing the abducted students rather than engaging in actions capable of heightening tension or disrupting ongoing operations.
NANS Ogun JCC urged members of the public to remain law-abiding, provide useful information to security agencies where necessary and continue to pray for the success of the rescue mission.
The association noted that reports indicate the Ogun State Police Command has already commenced coordinated rescue efforts and expressed confidence in the capacity of security agencies to secure the students’ freedom.
The council also commended the Inspector-General of Police for reinforcing the state’s security architecture through the deployment of a police helicopter to support surveillance, rapid response and other security operations.
It described the deployment as a strategic intervention that demonstrates the commitment of the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to combating insecurity and enhancing public safety in Ogun State.
According to the association, the additional operational asset is expected to strengthen intelligence gathering and significantly improve ongoing rescue operations.
NANS Ogun JCC further lauded the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, and other security personnel for their dedication to protecting lives and property across the state.
The student body urged the police commissioner to sustain and intensify rescue operations until all the abducted students are safely reunited with their families while also strengthening security around tertiary institutions and other vulnerable communities.
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and safety of Nigerian students, the council pledged to continue engaging government, security agencies and relevant stakeholders to ensure campuses remain safe environments for learning.
It stressed that cooperation, unity and confidence in security institutions would achieve more meaningful results than actions capable of creating unnecessary panic or tension.
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the abducted students, their families and the entire academic community. We are confident that, through coordinated security efforts and collective support from all stakeholders, the students will be rescued safely,” the statement added.
