NAOSS Dismisses 72-Hour Ultimatum to Odeda Chairman, Says Camp–Osiele Road Is Federal Responsibility
ABEOKUTA – The National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) has distanced itself from a purported 72-hour ultimatum allegedly issued to the Executive Chairman of Odeda Local Government, Hon. Folasade Adeyemo, over the deteriorating condition of the Camp–Osiele Road, describing the action as mischievous, misdirected and an embarrassment to responsible student activism.
In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Olubodun Olalekan Opeyemi, the association said the publication was the handiwork of “faceless impostors” who lacked a proper understanding of the constitutional responsibilities of different tiers of government.
According to NAOSS, the Camp–Osiele Road is a Federal Trunk A Road whose reconstruction falls exclusively under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Works, stressing that no local government chairman has the constitutional authority to undertake its reconstruction.
The association faulted the decision to target the Odeda council chairman, arguing that the ultimatum was a calculated attempt to generate unnecessary controversy instead of directing advocacy to the appropriate authority responsible for fixing the road.
NAOSS said it completely rejected what it described as sensational and uninformed activism, insisting that genuine student unionism should be driven by facts, intellectual depth and principled engagement rather than publicity stunts designed to attract attention.
The student body urged Ogun State students not to mistake media headlines for purposeful leadership, maintaining that advocacy without adequate knowledge of governance amounts to noise, while activism devoid of facts only undermines the credibility of student movements.
It further warned against dragging public officials into controversies over issues outside their constitutional powers, reaffirming its commitment to promoting constitutional accountability and defending the truth in public discourse.
NAOSS, however, called on the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently commence the reconstruction of the Camp–Osiele Road, insisting that sustained advocacy should be directed at the institutions legally responsible for the project.
The association also commended the Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, for what it described as his outstanding contributions to education, infrastructure and human capital development across the district.
It cited his digital skills training programmes, laptop empowerment initiatives, establishment of ICT centres, rehabilitation of the Camp–FUNAAB–Alabata Road, installation of solar-powered streetlights, construction of motorised solar-powered boreholes, healthcare interventions and youth and women empowerment programmes as evidence of impactful representation.
Reaffirming its commitment to responsible leadership, NAOSS pledged to continue promoting informed, solution-driven engagement while rejecting every form of advocacy that substitutes publicity for substance, adding that meaningful activism must always be anchored on facts, constitutional responsibility and the genuine welfare of students.
“The Camp–Osiele Road is a Federal Trunk A Road. Its reconstruction falls squarely under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Federal Ministry of Works.
“No amount of media grandstanding, emotional blackmail, or politically motivated ultimatums can alter this constitutional reality.
“The decision to target Hon. (Dr.) Waliat Folasade Adeyemo is therefore nothing more than a calculated attempt to generate controversy where none should exist. Rather than directing their energy toward the authority legally responsible for the road, the impostors have chosen the easier route of public spectacle and media noise.
“NAOSS rejects this style of activism in its entirety and we distance ourselves from those faceless individuals. Student unionism was built on facts, courage, intellectual depth, and principled engagement—not on sensational press releases intended to manufacture relevance or create the illusion of advocacy.”
