Ogun: Honour Police Invitation, Don’t Embark On ‘Politically Motivated’ Protest, NANS, SUG Presidents Tell Students
ABEOKUTA – The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun State Joint Campus Committee (JCC), alongside several Students’ Union Government (SUG) presidents across the state, has strongly condemned the proposed protest against the Ogun State Police Command and the Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Comrade Adeyemi Azeez Amoo.
PIn a statement signed by the Chairman of NANS Ogun JCC, Comrade Tijani Habeebullahi, the student body described allegations of harassment, intimidation, and victimization against the Special Assistant and the police as “baseless, misleading, and politically motivated.”
According to the statement, the memo currently circulating online was aimed at blackmailing the Nigeria Police Force, Ogun State Command, and tarnishing the image of the Governor’s aide without any factual basis.
“The publication is nothing more than another desperate attempt to drag the name and image of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs into baseless controversies while simultaneously attempting to blackmail the Nigeria Police Force into submission,” the statement read.
The students leadership praised the Ogun State Police Command for what it described as professionalism and responsiveness in handling student-related matters and security challenges within the state.
NANS Ogun JCC cited several recent achievements of the police command, including the rescue of kidnapped students in Sapade, the neutralization of an alleged kidnap kingpin in the Ijebu axis, and the intervention in the reported police brutality incident involving students of Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH).
The association maintained that police invitations for questioning should not be interpreted as intimidation, stressing that the police are constitutionally empowered to investigate petitions and invite individuals connected to ongoing cases.
“Whenever a petition is submitted against any individual, the Police have a constitutional responsibility to invite the persons involved for questioning and proper investigation,” the statement added.
Comrade Habeebullahi further revealed that after videos allegedly showing the assault of the Special Assistant surfaced online, he personally appealed to the aide to maintain peace and avoid retaliation.
He noted that the governor’s aide demonstrated maturity by instructing his supporters to remain calm, a move he said helped prevent further escalation.
The student body advised those invited by the police to honour the invitation and defend themselves lawfully instead of resorting to what it termed “emotional propaganda and public blackmail.”
“If those invited are genuinely innocent and have nothing to hide, they should not be afraid to honour police invitations and present their defence accordingly,” the statement noted.
NANS Ogun JCC also expressed concern over the activities of some individuals allegedly parading themselves as student leaders while engaging in misconduct, violence, and attacks on law enforcement officers.
The association recalled previous incidents involving assaults and public disturbances allegedly carried out by self-acclaimed student activists, describing such actions as disgraceful and unbecoming of student representatives.
The student leadership urged the Ogun State Police Command not to succumb to intimidation or distraction but to remain committed to justice, professionalism, and due process.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace and responsible engagement, NANS Ogun JCC warned against the use of student activism as a shield against lawful investigation and accountability.
“Ogun State students remain lovers of peace, progress, and responsible engagement, and no individual or group should be allowed to weaponize student activism as a shield against lawful investigation and accountability,” the statement concluded.
