ABEOKUTA -Operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 36-year-old man, Shobande Taofeek, over alleged vandalisation and theft of railway infrastructure in the Arigbajo axis of the state.

The police also recovered 16 railway iron rods and two gas cylinders suspected to have been stolen.

Spokesperson for the Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the arrest in a statement in Abeokuta yesterday.

Babaseyi said the arrest followed intelligence reports about the vandalisation and theft of railway materials in the area.

He said that on October 23, 2026, SWAT operatives intensified surveillance and patrols in the affected area, leading to the suspect’s arrest.

According to him, the suspect subsequently led the operatives to an uncompleted building where the items were recovered as exhibits.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect confessed to involvement in similar offences on three previous occasions,” Babaseyi said.

He added that efforts were ongoing to apprehend other suspects allegedly connected with the crime and recover additional stolen property.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, Bode Ojajuni, reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting public assets, safeguarding critical infrastructure and bringing perpetrators of economic sabotage to justice.

Ojajuni urged residents to provide the police with timely and credible information to support crime prevention and enhance security across the state.
