SHOCKER! Sacked OGWAMA MD, Abayomi Hunye Purchases ₦50m Governorship Form, Challenges Party’s Consensus Decision

ABEOKUTA – A controversial chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Abayomi Semako Hunye, has joined the race for the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections, despite lingering controversies surrounding his recent removal from office.

Hunye reportedly secured the APC governorship nomination forms valued at ₦50 million on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to a post circulating on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the forms were purchased on his behalf by undisclosed supporters, signalling what appears to be a coordinated effort to reintroduce him to the state’s political frontline.

Hunye, who never shown any intention of contesting for any political office after he was disgracefully removed from office as OGWAMA MD, surprisingly went to Abuja through his proxy to obtain a governorship nomination form.

The development comes after the Ogun APC had earlier settled for Senator Adeola Olamilekan Yayi as its consensus governorship candidate, a decision widely seen as an attempt to avoid internal divisions ahead of the elections.

However, Hunye’s entry into the race comes barely two months after he was dismissed by Governor Dapo Abiodun as the Managing Director of Ogun State Waste Management Agency (OGWAMA) over serious allegations, including extortion, high-handedness, diversion of public funds into private accounts, and abuse of office.

The state government had, at the time, described the decision as necessary to uphold accountability and public trust.

Despite the weight of these allegations, Hunye’s move suggests a determination to remain politically relevant and challenge the decision of his former boss, Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Political observers opined that his ambition may face significant hurdles within the party.

They also believed Hunye’s decision to obtain nomination forms could therefore disrupt the party’s fragile unity and potentially trigger a contested primary.

While some view it as a legitimate exercise of his political rights, others argued that his recent dismissal from office and the circumstances surrounding it could pose reputational risks for him.
