Support Group Defends Abiodun, Says Opponents Relying on ‘Unproven Allegations’ Instead of Performance Debate
ABEOKUTA – A pro-government group, Sustainability of Ogun State and Dapo Abiodun Legacy Beyond 2027 has risen against accused critics of Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun of recycling unsubstantiated allegations while ignoring the administration’s developmental record.
In a statement issued by the Convener of the group, Arabambi Abayomi, the group said recent attacks linked to allies of former governor Gbenga Daniel were driven more by political frustration than verified facts.
The group specifically rejected allegations that Abiodun diverted N17 billion from local government funds, insisting that available records showed the money was instead used by the state government to offset salary deficits faced by councils during periods of declining federal allocations.
According to the statement, the Joint Account Allocation Committee, comprising council chairmen, labour representatives and other stakeholders, oversaw allocation decisions collectively.
The rejoinder noted that despite repeated public accusations, no documentary evidence or judicial findings had been produced to establish criminal wrongdoing against the governor.
The group also criticised renewed focus on an alleged decades-old arrest record in the United States, arguing that the issue had no legal consequence on Abiodun’s eligibility to hold office.
It stated that the governor had contested elections multiple times, passed constitutional requirements and prevailed in court challenges.
Similarly, references to the Pandora Papers were described as misleading, with the group maintaining that ownership of offshore companies did not automatically amount to criminal conduct in the absence of any proven violation.
Beyond the defence against allegations, the statement placed heavy emphasis on what it called the governor’s “visible performance record.”
The group claimed that Ogun State had witnessed significant economic growth under the current administration, with internally generated revenue increasing from N45 billion to over N240 billion annually.
It also pointed to improvements in industrial activity and infrastructure, particularly road construction projects and investments in free trade zones across the state.
Particular attention was given to the recent launch of international flight operations from the Gateway International Airport in Iperu, where hundreds of Hajj pilgrims were airlifted directly to Saudi Arabia.
The development, according to the group, marked Ogun State’s emergence as an international aviation hub and demonstrated what it described as “practical governance outcomes” under Abiodun.
“Senator Daniel was governor of Ogun State from 2003 to 2011. Eight years. In those eight years, did any international flight depart from an Ogun State airport? Did any Ogun pilgrim board a flight from their home state to Mecca? The answer is no. I am not saying this to insult him. I am saying it because it is true. Every leader has strengths and weaknesses. But you cannot come for a man who has achieved something you never did. You just cannot.
“And the airport is not the only thing. Ogun State under Abiodun has become the industrial capital of the South West. Walk into any of the free trade zones. Look at the number of factories operating at full capacity.
“Look at the trucks moving goods in and out of the state every single day. That did not happen by accident. It happened because the governor created an environment where businesses feel safe to invest.”
The statement argued that political debates ahead of future elections should focus on governance performance, economic growth and infrastructural development rather than “recycled accusations unsupported by evidence.”
It concluded by urging political stakeholders in Ogun East to support continuity and stability within the ruling APC, insisting that Abiodun’s growing influence in the South-West was tied to his administration’s achievements rather than political propaganda.
