LAGOS – The Nigeria Police Force has initiated an investigation into the fatal shooting of Gabriel Audu, which occurred on August 8 in the Surulere area of Lagos State.
The incident involves a police officer assigned as a security aide to Wale Fapohunda, a well-known lawyer in the state.
According to an official police statement, the suspect, Corporal Umar Lawal from the Special Protection Unit (SPU) Base 10 in Sokoto, allegedly attempted to shoot a man identified as Mr. Vincent, also known as Dogman, during a heated argument over a used phone.
It was gathered that the bullet intended for Vincent struck Audu, who was reportedly also attached to the same lawyer.
The shooting was said to have taken place at approximately 10:22 p.m., and law enforcement responded quickly to the scene.
A police team was dispatched to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), where Corporal Lawal was apprehended. The AK-47 rifle used in the shooting was also recovered from the scene.
In his confession, Corporal Lawal admitted to the crime, stating that he had intended to shoot Vincent during their argument.
However, the bullet hit Audu in the chest, leading to his death. Audu was rushed to LUTH General Hospital in Idiaraba, where he was pronounced dead.
The deceased’s body has been photographed and placed in the hospital morgue, pending an autopsy.
The police have assured the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
