ILORIN – Residents of Lafiaji Community in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State are living in fear following a deadly attack on Mayfold Poultry and Agroallied Farm.
The raid has left one security guard dead, several people kidnapped, and livelihoods destroyed.
The first incident occurred on June 10, 2025, when gunmen stormed the farm at night.
Witnesses described the attackers as moving swiftly, taking frozen chickens, cash, office equipment, and other valuables.
“It happened so fast. They didn’t waste time. They fired shots into the air and took everything,” said a terrified farm worker who asked not to be named.
The violence escalated on June 30, when the terrorists returned for a deadlier strike. Mr. Lateef Olalere, the farm’s security guard, was killed, and parts of the farm and ranch were set ablaze.
A POS operator and a nearby policeman were kidnapped; their bodies were later found in a bush.
Survivors said the attackers threatened to return for the farm owner, Dr. Agbaje Aremu, and Pastor Babatunde Akanbi, who holds weekly Bible studies for staff members.
One employee said, “They told us Kwara is a Muslim state and Nigeria an Islamic country. Christians cannot be allowed here. They said they will come back.”
Local residents and traders are on edge. Alhaji Musa, a nearby farmer, said, “We are scared to go to the farm or even leave our homes. Our livelihoods depend on farming, but we cannot risk our lives.” Small businesses and local markets have seen a drop in activity as fear spreads.
Security experts warned that the assailants operate from dense forest hideouts, making them hard to track.
Authorities urged residents to stay vigilant, share intelligence, and avoid confrontation.
In response, the Kwara State Government, through Chief Press Secretary Rafiu Ajakaye, promised increased security.
“The government is working with the military, police, and other agencies to secure Edu, Patigi, and surrounding communities. Those responsible will be brought to justice,” he said.
Local vigilantes have intensified patrols but admit they are outgunned.
“We want to protect our people, but the attackers are heavily armed. We urge the government to send more troops and equipment,” said one vigilante leader.
The attacks have left the Lafiaji community in fear, with residents uncertain about their safety and the future of their farms.
