Temitope Tele-Olukoya: How Orile-Agege’s Only Female Councillor Is Making Her Mark in Ward E
By Akin Alade

As Hon. Temitope Aminat Tele-Olukoya, Councillor representing Ward E in Orile-Agege Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, celebrates another year of life, attention is increasingly turning beyond the birthday festivities to her emerging record of grassroots representation, community engagement and advocacy for development.
For the Ward E lawmaker, becoming a year older provides an opportunity not only for celebration but also for reflection on the responsibility entrusted to her by the electorate.
Tele-Olukoya occupies a distinctive place in the political leadership of Orile-Agege as the only female councillor in the LCDA, making her journey particularly significant at a time when calls for greater participation of women in Nigerian politics continue to grow.
Her presence in the Legislative Arm demonstrates that women can play important roles in shaping policies and advancing development at the level of government closest to the people.
From Election Victory to Grassroots Representation
Since assuming office, Tele-Olukoya has sought to maintain close engagement with residents, community leaders, youths, women and other stakeholders in Ward E.
Her approach to representation is anchored on the belief that a councillor should not disappear into the political establishment after an election but remain accessible to the people.
This philosophy was reflected at a recent Ward E stakeholders’ meeting, where she reviewed developments within the ward while acknowledging that much more remains to be accomplished.
Among the infrastructure projects highlighted is the completed interlocking road on Moses Street, which has improved accessibility within the community.
Another major intervention is the approved School Road/Adebeshin Street road and drainage project, expected to address transportation and drainage challenges when implemented.
For residents of densely populated communities such as Orile-Agege, these interventions have implications beyond aesthetics. Better roads and drainage can improve mobility, commercial activities, environmental sanitation and resilience against flooding.
Taking the Fight Against Flooding to the Legislative Chamber
The Legislative Arm successfully moved a motion calling for the urgent desilting of drainage channels, an intervention intended to improve the free flow of stormwater and reduce the risk of flooding.
For Tele-Olukoya, community development requires both physical projects and responsible environmental management.
She has consequently continued to support sanitation programmes while encouraging residents and community organisations to participate in keeping their environment clean.
Education Support for Ward E Children and Students
Another important area of development highlighted by the councillor is education. Public primary school pupils have benefited from the distribution of exercise books and writing materials, while desks and benches have been approved for schools across the LCDA.
Students have also benefited from the free distribution of GCE and JAMB forms under educational initiatives associated with the administration of the Executive Chairman of Orile-Agege LCDA, Hon. Akinola Abiodun Idowu.
For families struggling with educational expenses, interventions of this nature can make an important difference.
They also underline the need for grassroots governments to invest not only in physical infrastructure but in human capital.
Today’s beneficiaries of educational assistance could become tomorrow’s doctors, engineers, lawyers, entrepreneurs, academics and public servants.
Welfare for Widows, Widowers and Elderly Residents
The administration has equally paid attention to vulnerable residents. Through welfare initiatives associated with the office of the First Lady of Orile-Agege LCDA, Mrs Fatima Adebukola Idowu, widows, widowers and elderly residents have benefited from monthly food assistance, while empowerment grants of ₦100,000 have also been provided to beneficiaries.
Such programmes are particularly significant at a time when the rising cost of living continues to place pressure on household finances.
Tele-Olukoya’s support for community and youth groups also reinforces her belief that political representation must have a human dimension.
Solar Streetlights to Improve Security
Security remains another important concern for Ward E residents.
To improve nighttime visibility and complement community security efforts, solar-powered streetlights have been procured for installation at strategic locations across Ward E.
Functional streetlighting can contribute to safer streets while also allowing economic and social activities to continue more conveniently after sunset.
Taken together, the interventions in roads, drainage, education, welfare, sanitation and streetlighting provide an indication of the development priorities emerging within the ward.
Tele-Olukoya Credits Chairman Akinola Idowu for Support
Rather than claiming every achievement personally, Tele-Olukoya has consistently acknowledged the collaborative nature of grassroots governance.
She has particularly praised the leadership of Orile-Agege LCDA Executive Chairman, Hon. Akinola Abiodun Idowu, while recognising the contributions of the council’s Legislative Arm and other stakeholders.
She has also expressed appreciation to traditional rulers, religious leaders, community development associations, market leaders, youth organisations and women’s groups for supporting efforts to develop Ward E.
The approach reflects an understanding that no councillor can single-handedly transform a ward.
Successful grassroots governance requires cooperation among the executive, legislature, traditional institutions, community organisations and residents.
A Female Voice in Grassroots Politics
Beyond individual projects, Tele-Olukoya’s political journey carries another significance.
Nigeria continues to record comparatively low female representation across different levels of elective government.
Her position as Orile-Agege LCDA’s only female councillor therefore places additional expectations upon her. Every visible achievement potentially strengthens the argument that women deserve greater opportunities in political leadership.
For younger women and girls in Ward E watching her journey, her presence within the council chamber may itself become a source of inspiration.
Political leadership should never be determined by gender but by competence, character, accessibility and the capacity to serve.
Birthday Comes With Greater Expectations
As congratulations pour in on her birthday, Tele-Olukoya will undoubtedly appreciate the goodwill. But public office means birthdays can also become moments of accountability.
The people of Ward E will expect existing projects to be completed while demanding additional interventions in roads, drainage, education, security, sanitation, youth development and economic empowerment.
They will expect their councillor to continue speaking for them within the Legislative Arm.
They will also expect accessibility and constant engagement.
For Tele-Olukoya, therefore, the new age comes with renewed responsibility.
Her political story is still being written, and ultimately, her legacy will be determined not by birthday tributes or political titles but by the lives positively affected during her period in office.
For now, her emerging record presents the picture of a female grassroots politician seeking to combine legislative responsibility with community engagement and development advocacy.
As Hon. Temitope Aminat Tele-Olukoya celebrates another year, Ward E celebrates with her while looking forward to the next chapter of her representation.
Happy birthday to Hon. Temitope Aminat Tele-Olukoya — Councillor representing Ward E, Orile-Agege LCDA. May the new year bring greater wisdom, strength and opportunities for service to humanity.
