Escaped Suspect Allegedly Spotted at Lagos Airport as Police Manhunt Raises Questions

LAGOS — Questions have emerged over the intelligence-gathering capacity of the Nigeria Police Force following reports that Adafin Adetokunbo Michael, a suspect previously declared wanted after allegedly escaping police custody, was sighted at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, reportedly preparing to leave the country.

The reported sighting has raised concerns over how a suspect who was allegedly being tracked by security operatives could make his way to an international airport without being apprehended.

Recall that Michael was declared wanted by Police authorities for allegedly involved in bisexual activities in Lagos, an offense which attracted 14years in prison.

Although details surrounding the reported airport sighting remain unclear, the development, if verified, could expose significant gaps in the police’s surveillance, intelligence-sharing and border-control coordination.

Michael was previously reported to have been located in Abuja after escaping police custody in Lagos, prompting a manhunt by security operatives.

A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, had earlier disclosed that intelligence reports indicated that the suspect was sighted in Kubwa and along Airport Road in the Federal Capital Territory.

The source also claimed that police operatives raided a hotel in Kubwa in search of Michael but arrived after he had allegedly left the location.

The latest report of his sighting at the Lagos international airport has, however, raised fresh questions about whether the police had effectively tracked his movements after declaring him wanted.

Of particular concern is how a suspect reportedly under investigation could allegedly travel from Abuja to Lagos and gain access to an international departure facility without being intercepted, if the manhunt was still active.

The development has also renewed calls for improved intelligence coordination among police commands, airport security personnel, immigration authorities and other relevant agencies to prevent wanted suspects from evading arrest.

Security analysts have repeatedly emphasised the importance of real-time intelligence sharing, effective surveillance and prompt communication between law enforcement agencies in tracking suspects and preventing their escape.

However, the circumstances surrounding Michael’s alleged appearance at the airport, including whether he actually boarded an international flight and his purported destination, have yet to be independently established.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official confirmation that Michael had left Nigeria or that the police had formally acknowledged the reported airport sighting.

The Nigeria Police Force is expected to clarify the status of the manhunt and explain what measures, if any, were taken to prevent the suspect from leaving the country.

The case has once again brought into focus the need for effective policing, credible intelligence gathering and accountability in the handling of suspects, particularly where an active manhunt has been announced.
